Crossing my fingers for @TrueBloodHBO. #shortyawards
Back in January, @LafayetteTB and I put in the hard push for everyone and their mothers to nominate @TrueBloodHBO for a Shorty Award in the entertainment category.
The Shorty Awards honor the Best Producers of short, real-time content on Twitter. It’s about identifying and celebrating the people that help make your experience on Twitter fun and entertaining everyday. Since what brought many of our friends and followers to Twitter was our love of the show True Blood and its characters, it seemed like a fitting way to say thank you.
Tonight I’m going to make my way from Bon Temps to the Big Apple to cheer on @TrueBloodHBO. They’re up against some pretty big competition — in first place, you’ve got the official Mythbusters crew (@Mythbusters) and in second, you’ve got a person tweeting as the character Richard Castle (@WriteRCastle).
Both have a lead over @TrueBloodHBO in the popular vote.
That said, I still have faith that @TrueBloodHBO has a fighting chance to win tonight. Here’s why. The Shorty Awards isn’t a popularity contest. Yes, the number of popular votes does count toward the final result. However, a couple of other factors come to play — there is a panel of judges called the Real Time Academy consisting of everyone from social media experts to celebrities like Alyssa Milano on Twitter who review all finalists and make their own selections. Secondly, each of the finalists is asked to answer a Shorty Interview. The quality of their answers are read by the Real Time Academy and do count toward the final result. You can read @TrueBloodHBO’s answers to the Shorty interview here.
Lastly, and maybe it’s because I’m biased, I do believe that the True Blood community of friends and fans is one of the tightest out there. By my count, there are over 250 characters that make up the world of Bon Temps on Twitter, and thousands of fans that follow @TrueBloodHBO, @HBO, and all of the crazy people like me that tweet as characters. And because they’ve managed to help foster that community, they should win.
If you’re interested in watching the Shorty Award action unfold, you can watch the Shorty Awards via Livestream tonight at 7:30pm EST here. I’ll be on the ground at the awards, tweeting away, hoping to get a pic of William Shatner. Keep your fingers crossed.
